Marnie saw her first ballet when she was 3 years old and told her mom that is what she wanted to do. Begging her mother for years, she finally enrolled at the Portland School of Ballet in Maine. At the age of 10, Marnie’s mother began driving over 2 hours away to the Boston Ballet, so she could receive additional training. Marnie was accepted in to the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s summer intensive and the following year attended School of American Ballet in New York City as a scholarship student. This was where she studied for 4 consecutive summers with teachers that were trained by or had danced for the world renowned George Balanchine.
Marnie’s family moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina, so she could further her ballet training and gain more performing experience, while mixing academics into her rigorous schedule at University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She attended from grades 7-12. After graduating, she went on to perform in Philadelphia with the Pennsylvania Ballet in such ballets as The Nutcracker, Concerto in Three Movements, A Mid Summers Night Dream, Donizetti Variations, Swan Lake and Concerto Barocco. This was where Marnie was first asked to teach a ballet class and quickly fell in love with the notion of being able to bring joy into the ballet classroom and not boredom.
Marnie’s teaching led her back to North Carolina where she has taught throughout the state at such schools and companies as: Wake Forest University, The North Carolina Dance Theatre, The Dance Shop (Archdale), ExtravaDance and Tumble (Kernersville), We’re Dancin’ (Matthews), Dancers Unlimited (Mooresville), Visions Dance Academy (Ballantyne), High Point Ballet, and Sandhills Dance and Performing Arts Academy (Pinehurst). She was a Principal dancer with the latter two companies for several years, as well as co-producer for Sandhills bi-annual performances. Marnie has choreographed mini ballets such as: The Nutcracker, Snow White, The Western, Cinderella, Gaîté Parisienne, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, La Boutique Fantasque, Alice in Wonderland and Firebird. She also won the teacher division for a pointe solo during a Showstopper dance competition and was recruited by the owner, Debbie Roberts, to teach ballet at her then, Archdale, North Carolina, dance studio.
Marnie’s other accomplishments include a BA in Liberal Studies from UNC Greensboro, being a certified Yoga instructor, judging for Applause dance competitions and choreographing award winning pieces for North Carolina pageants. However, her greatest achievement is her family, daughter-Selena, son-Luca and supportive husband, Kevin.
